If you have ever watched a rooster chase a hen around the yard and wondered what exactly is happening — and whether it is actually producing fertile eggs — you are asking the right questions. Many farmers assume that as long as there is a rooster in the pen, the eggs will hatch. Then they set a batch of eggs in the incubator, wait 21 days, and get nothing. Understanding how chicken mating and reproduction actually work is often the difference between a successful hatch and a wasted month.

In Kenya, where daylight hours are fairly consistent year-round near the equator, heat stress and nutrition are usually bigger factors than day length. Keep breeding birds cool, well-watered, and on a balanced breeder ration during hot periods.
A Note on the Cloaca and Bird Health
Since the cloaca handles reproduction, egg-laying, and waste elimination all through one opening, its health matters more than most farmers realize. Stress, especially heat stress, affects what passes through it, and conditions like infectious bronchitis can cause urate crystals to accumulate and damage the urinary tract.
Young birds also have a small grape-shaped organ called the cloacal bursa on the upper side of the cloaca. It plays a role in the immune system and naturally shrinks as the bird ages — a detail veterinarians use when aging birds and assessing disease.
If you notice persistent pasting, swelling, or discharge around the vent of your breeding birds, consult a veterinarian rather than guessing at treatment. Reproductive problems handled early are far cheaper than a failed breeding season.
